About IIPH, Shillong
The Indian Institute Public Health (IIPH) Shillong was established by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya (GoM). The Institute aims to redress the limited institutional and systems capacity in public health in the northeast region of India.
The northeast region of India is largely populated by indigenous peoples (scheduled tribes). Many areas in the northeast continue to grapple with poor health indices. The region consists of eight states namely: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. Together the land mass is bordered by Nepal, Bhutan, China, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The Workshop on ”Challenges in Public Health Ethics” was held on February 13-14, 2025, at the Moreau Institute of Integral Training (MIIT), Shillong, with Dr. Olinda Timms, Adjunct Professor at St. John’s Research Institute, Bangalore, as the key speaker. The workshop explored ethical dilemmas in public health through presentations, case studies which reflected scenarios from the north east region and discussions. A reflective exercise of the Covid19 pandemic enabled participants to discuss learnings and way forward.
An interactive session on Community Health Workers and Reproductive Rights by Dr. Shaibya also enabled participants to voice their concerns and dilemmas related to practice.The workshop ended with closing remarks by Dr. Timms, summarizing key insights and takeaways.
