Heartfelt congratulations to the B.Sc. Public Health and MPH students of the 2024 graduating batch on this momentous occasion! We are thrilled to share that the 17th Convocation was hosted by our esteemed partner, Martin Luther Christian University, at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture, Mawkasiang, Shillong, on September 20, 2024.

This year’s convocation was graced by Fr. Stephen Mavely, former Vice Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, who delivered an inspiring speech as the event’s guest speaker. Presiding over the convocation was the Hon’ble Shri C H Vijayashankar, Governor of Meghalaya, who, as the Visitor of the University, brought a special honor to the event.

A particularly exciting milestone was reached with the recognition of our first-ever PhD graduates, Shri Sampath Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department, Meghalaya, and Ms. Carinthia Nengnong, who proudly received their doctoral degrees, marking a historic moment for our institution and setting an inspiring example for future students.

Our graduates have worked tirelessly to reach this stage, and we couldn’t be more proud of their achievements. We look forward to seeing the incredible impact they will continue to make in the field of public health!

The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong in collaboration with the RPCH Hospital in Shillong, conducted a comprehensive training in Basic Life Support (BLS) from September 17 to 19, 2024, at the Hospital premises. The program, designed to equip participants with essential lifesaving skills was held successfully with a participation of 90 participants. The hands-on program covered crucial techniques such as CPR, AED usage, and effective choking relief methods. Led by  instructor Dr. T Jamir and Phibansuk Lyngdoh with support from Isberth Tham, 108 ambulance service, the training emphasized practical scenarios and real-life applications, ensuring participants developed confidence and competence. The training included both medical and non-medical staff, fostering a collaborative approach to emergency response.   Click Here

The Zoonotic Vector Borne Disease Research and Training Centre, in collaboration with Grassroots Shillong, conducted a two-day training for local volunteers in Mawthadraishan Block, Eastern West Khasi Hills District on 23rd and 24th of August. Volunteers from several surrounding villages gathered in Nongshillong. Skits, games, and activities were used to give volunteers a basic understanding of zoonotic diseases, their main symptoms and how to protect against them. They were also briefed on the purpose and procedure of research and how it contributes to everyday healthcare practice. On the second day, the volunteers were taught communication skills and feedback analysis with cultural sensitivity by the Grassroots Shillong team. Representatives from the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) presented two research studies at the 10th International Conference on Public Health ICOPH 2024, held in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 15 and 16, 2024. Carinthia Balabet Nengnong, Research Officer and PhD Scholar, presented her paper on the “Cost Effectiveness Analysis of Thiamine Supplementation among Pregnant and Postpartum Women to Prevent Infantile Beriberi Deaths.” Dr. Eliza Dutta, Assistant Professor, presented on the “Analysis of Cancer Claims Data from the Megha Health Insurance Scheme in Meghalaya, North-East India.” The conference provided a remarkable platform for sharing research with a diverse and knowledgeable audience sparking new ideas and potential avenues for future public health research. Additionally, the vibrant city of Bangkok and its exquisite cuisine offered the team a rich cultural experience, further enhancing their visit.

On 25th July, 2024, Dr. Soma Chaudhuri delivered a public health lecture on Negotiating Livability for Precarious Lives: Childhood Education and Women’s Agency In India. Her talk focuses on how violence at the community and household level is used to legitimize structural and institutional level gender inequalities that specifically disadvantage grassroots women.  Click Here

The Zoonotic Vector Borne Research and Training Centre, Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Shillong along with the Centre for Gender in Global Context, Michigan State University had organized a two day workshop on Advanced Data Analysis of Qualitative Data on July 24 and 25, 2024 at IIPH Shillong. This workshop was facilitated by Dr Soma Chaudhuri who is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. She is also the Co-Director of Global Research for the Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) which is the university’s hub for gender-based research and curriculum. Young professionals from different institutes in the state and region benefitted from this workshop. We are also glad to inform that IIPH Shillong has signed an MoU with Michigan State University in March 2024. On July 18, 2024, the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) in collaboration with the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) organised a dissemination programme to share findings from the study titled “Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices regarding HIV/AIDS, Injecting Drugs, and Sexual Practices among Truckers and Allied Population in East Jaiñtia Hills District of Meghalaya.” The event took place at the office of the Truckers Association at Wapung village, East Jaiñtia Hills with the members of the EJH Truckers Association. It commenced with an awareness session conducted by experts from MACS, who provided vital information on HIV transmission and safe sexual practices. This interactive session allowed participants to engage actively and ask numerous questions, enhancing their understanding and awareness. Following the awareness session, IIPHS presented the study findings to the participant which is a crucial part of research ethics, ensuring that the results are shared with the community that participated in the study. IEC materials from the MACS office were distributed to the members of the Truckers Association to reinforce the information shared during the event and support ongoing awareness and education efforts. This programme highlighted the importance of community engagement and the role of collaborative efforts in addressing HIV/AIDS, particularly among high risk groups of truckers.    Click Here

A workshop on teaching and learning was conducted by Dr. Sandra Albert, Director of IIPHS, at Holycross Campus on 28th June 2024. The workshop was attended by faculty members and research scholars involved in mentoring students of Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BPH) and Master of Public Health (MPH) courses. The workshop aimed to familiarize participants with various teaching methodologies and principles of adult learning. It emphasized creating conducive environments for adult learners and enhancing their learning experiences. The workshop featured practical activities such as the Multiple Intelligence Inventory and Myers-Briggs Personality Test, which helped participants understand different learning styles and personalities. The workshop concluded on a positive note, with participants expressing high satisfaction and enthusiasm. This workshop not only enriched the participating teachers and scholars but also underscored IIPHS’s commitment to fostering continuous professional development among its faculty, ultimately benefiting the educational experience of its students.   Click Here

IIPHS organised a three-day training program on National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification for PHC and HWC from the 10th – 12th June 2024 at the Holycross campus, Shillong. The training focused on comprehensive understanding of the NQAS Standards, criteria and requirements, practical approaches to implementing and adhering to these standards at the facility level and understanding of the assessment and evaluation techniques. HTAIn-RRC research staff from IIPH Shillong participated in the Health Economic Evaluation workshop organised by the Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the 22 HTAIn Resource Centers on May 9 and 10, 2024 at Delhi.

“The first Regional Conference on Health in Northeast India was organized by the National Lutheran Health and Medical Board (NLHMB) in collaboration with the Department of Allied Health Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetics, Martin Luther Christian University, and the Indian Institute of Public Health, Shillong on April 25 to 26, 2024. The theme of the conference was “Advancing Health Equity: Bridging the Gaps scheduled” with “Local solutions for local problems” emerged as the guiding principle. The Conference included keynote addresses and scientific (oral and poster) presentations on a range of topics, as well as a riveting panel discussion on vaccination challenges in Meghalaya.” The papers presented by the students of IIPHS was appreciated. The Health Financing Module was held at Indian Institute of Public Health, Shillong from April 9th – 12th, 2024 for the MPH, MSc HETA students and staff. The sessions, were facilitated by experts from World Health Organization Country Office for India Dr. Grace Achungura, Dr. Jaidev Singh Anand, and Dr. Priyanka Pandit. The module delved into crucial concepts shaping healthcare today. Key topics like Universal Health Coverage, Health Financing Progress Matrix, revenue raising, resource pooling, strategic purchasing, and benefit package design were extensively covered, offering invaluable insights into the intricate workings of healthcare financing. A highlight of the module was the insightful field visit to the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS), Office of the Chief Executive Officer, State Nodal Agency, Megha Health Insurance Scheme, Department of Health and Family Welfare where the MHIS State team provided in-depth orientation on health insurance schemes, notably MHIS and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY).The sessions were not just informative but engaging, fostering a deeper understanding of health financing among all attendees – students and staff alike.

CRTP One Health Research Fellows from IIPH Shillong attended two-days Implementation Science Course jointly organized by Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC) India and Emory University US, held from April 23-24, 2024 at Delhi, aimed to enhance implementation research capacity and facilitate the translation of evidence into policy and practice. The course was led by diverse faculty from India and the US, India Sailesh Mohan, Shifalika Goenka, Dorairaj Prabhkaran, Leslie Johnson and Mohammed Ali. IIPH Shillong Researchers wins awards at Prestigious 68th Annual National Conference of the Indian Public Health Association at Manali, Himachal Pradesh

The Research team from the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) actively participated in the 68th Annual National Conference of the Indian Public Health Association with its theme “Harnessing Digital Health for Public Health Advancements: Transforming Healthcare Delivery and Research”. The conference was held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in Manali, Himachal Pradesh from March 14 to 17, 2024. The conference featured comprehensive plenary sessions covering a diverse array of topics, including tuberculosis, anaemia, successful field outbreak stories, maternal health, HPV vaccine, one health initiatives, and non-communicable diseases such as wellness and mental health. Experts presented their topics on infectious diseases, intervention programs, and surveillance data, enriching the knowledge pool of attendees. Additionally, the event hosted a marketplace where vendors exhibited a variety of portable health devices tailored for anaemia detection and management. During the event, the IIPHS team displayed their research work through both oral and poster presentations. Among them, two young researchers were awarded for their work. MS Carinthia Balabet Nengnong, Research Officer, received the Best Oral Presentation award for her study titled “Community and Health Worker Perspectives on Malaria in Meghalaya, India: Covering the Last Mile of Elimination by 2030.” Dr. Deepak Rajan, One Health CRTP (Clinical Research and Training Programme) Research Fellow, was honoured with the Best Poster award for his research titled “Trends of Leptospirosis in Kerala: A Secondary Data Analysis.”  Amidst the academic sessions, recreational activities such as mountain climbing, and cultural programs were organised to enhance the participants’ conference experience and provide opportunities for enjoyment and relaxation. Furthermore, the conference served as a platform for our research team to engage with esteemed professionals from various Indian states, enabling valuable networking opportunities to strengthen future collaborations and offered the institute a chance to assert its presence and demonstrate its work within the broader community of public health professionals.    Click Here

Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) along with the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and Regional Medical Research Centre, Dibrugarh jointly organized the Regional Consultative Workshop on Research Priority for Providing Accessible and Affordable Healthcare for North East States of India’ on the 21st and 22nd of February, 2024 at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. The Hon’ble Union Minister of Health, Government of India – Dr Mansukh Mandaviya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare- Dr Bharti Pravin Pawar and Health Minister of Meghalaya- Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh were the Guest of Honor for the Inaugural Session. The Chief Guest- Dr Mansukh Mandaviya declared open the launch of the Masters Programme in Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment at the IIPHS.

The objective of the workshop was to provide a forum for Health Technology Assessment (HTA) stakeholders such as academia, researchers and policy makers to share their views on the importance of HTA as a contributing step towards Universal Health Coverage. The Principal Secretary of all the eight North East States- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura with their team were invited for a panel discussion to highlight key challenges in their respective states and priority research areas to be focused for the future. During the two days of the event there was a lot of brainstorming on the challenges faced by the North East Region in the domain of health and some possible and feasible solutions were explored backed by studies that can be adopted in the future for improving health outcomes in the region.  Click Here 

 

Qualitative Research Officers of the IIPH Shillong participated in a Training Course for Qualitative Research Methodology in Environmental Health organized by the Division of Environmental Monitoring and Exposure Assessment (Water & Soil) at the ICMR – National Institute for Research in Environmental Health, Bhopal. The workshop was in a hybrid mode where both online and offline sessions were conducted, the online session (Jan, 11-13, 2024) was followed by a classroom session (Feb, 9-13, 2024). The sessions included theoretical approaches of qualitative research, methods, analysis, qualitative writing and hands on experience of the qualitative software MAXQDA.  Click Here

Members of the IIPH Shillong participated in the “Winter Symposium & South Zone MicroCon 2024 -“One Health One World: Connecting the Dots” , a three-day event organized by Christian Medical College Vellore from February 1st-3rd, 2024. The symposium featured distinguished scientists from both India and abroad, focusing latest advancements in AMR, VBDs, and zoonoses. It also highlighted the importance of a One Health approach in addressing these challenges. Representatives from IIPH Shillong displayed posters presenting their research alongside over 100 delegates from various research institutions. The studies presented included:-

Members of IIPH Shillong, including fellows, faculty, and staffs, participated in a workshop on “Electronic Data Collection and Quality Control Pipelines for Field Studies” held at Christian Medical College, Vellore, on January 31st, 2024. The comprehensive one-day event delved into diverse tools, applications, and quality control measures essential for generating high-quality data, with practical applicability to the local context. Through the IPSI project, we piloted the Qualitative study in West Garo Hills for 3 identified studies outlined below –

Study no. 1: To examine the collection and management of data from households (family folders and CBAC)

Study no. 2: To document the functioning of, and roles played by community platforms in driving community action for health – yet to be started

Study No. 3: To understand challenges faced in the delivery of and access to comprehensive services in HWCs especially NCDs – yet to be started

The qualitative Study No 1 was piloted in the month of December 2023. During this study, the qualitative teams conducted In-depth interviews with frontline workers such as MO, CHO, ANM and ASHAs. This was also done to understand the data usage by primary-level healthcare facilities for local planning. Blocks identified for the IDIs are Selsella, Rongram and Dalu. We have completed a total of 20 interviews (10 ASHAs, 6 ANMs, 3 CHOs and 1 MO) for the first study on understanding the data flow and data usage for local planning at health facilities.  Click Here

The Zoonotic and Vector Borne Disease Research Center at the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong recently organized a training in Ichamati town. Village leaders, ASHAs, Anganwadi workers, and community volunteers were briefed on various zoonotic diseases. Dr. Rajiv Sarkar and Ahiezer Suchiang discussed ongoing projects, including Baseline Census and Cross-Sectional Surveys. Alice Lyngdoh and Mercylin Lyngdoh led a session on household enrollment for the third phase of the Longitudinal Study.  While Lab Research Associate Peter J Marbaniang gave a sneak peek into the upcoming TMRC-STH project which will be launching side by side with the ZVBD Kudos to the dedicated team for making strides in public health on the 24/01/24.  Click Here

Meghalaya’s remarkable reduction in maternal mortality reflects a collaborative dedication to health challenges. The One Health Seminar emphasized human-animal-environment interconnectedness, addressing developmental challenges. Hon’ble Health Minister Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh stressed research’s policy role, with potential university status for IIPHS. Principal Secretary Shri Sampath Kumar expressed pride in ZVBDC, highlighting Meghalaya’s unique health-integrated housing mission and research-driven policy interventions. On December 7th and 8th, 2023, the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) hosted a workshop titled “Introduction to Statistical Data Analysis using R”. The workshop was led by Ms. Sumali Bajaj, a PhD student specializing in infectious disease modeling at the University of Oxford, UK. On November 27 and 28, 2023, the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) hosted a workshop titled “Reflective Writing and Public Health Practice: Drawing Insights from the UK” for the MPH students, research staff, and junior faculty. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Rajan Madhok, a distinguished public health doctor with extensive experience in senior medical management roles within the National Health Service (NHS) UK. The workshop offered valuable guidance on embracing reflective practices and its application in Public Health and navigating the complexities of implementing health policies.
The workshop was followed by a Public Health Series Lecture delivered by Dr. Madhok where he shared his wealth of experience and insights of Health systems and the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK.   Click Here

We congratulate Emmy Pyngrope for securing second position at the poster competition. Presented our community based cancer intervention project, Women Empowerment for Cancer prevention (WECan) at the American Association for Cancer Research on campus conference at the ACTREC, Navi Mumbai. The 6th IAPSM NEZCON 2023, themed “Value-based Comprehensive Primary Health Care: Reaching SDGs,” was hosted by the Department of Community Medicine at Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh from the 13th to the 15th of October, 2023. IIPHS was honored with an invitation to join a panel discussion on “Public Health Innovations in the North East,” where the institute was represented by its Director, Professor Sandra Albert. Furthermore, the institute was invited to showcase its initiative aimed at strengthening Comprehensive Primary Healthcare in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Indian Primary Healthcare Support Initiative. On the 13th of October 2023, our Director, Prof. Sandra Albert, received an invitation to provide expert input and review the report content for the ICMR-NCDIR’s WHO South East Asia Region Cancer Profile. This profile includes an analysis of the cancer burden and national responses in the region, including country-specific data. The ultimate goal of this endeavor is to contribute to the enhancement of cancer control efforts in the region. “The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS), in collaboration with the India Primary Healthcare Support Initiative (IPSI), AIIMS-New Delhi, Johns Hopkins University, and the Government of Meghalaya, convened the District kickoff meeting for the Comprehensive Primary Health Care Support Initiative project in West Garo Hills. The meeting was presided over by Shri Jagdish Chelani, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills. The program, held on October 9th, 2023, at the Circuit House Tura, was attended by the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), senior health officials, NGOs dedicated to healthcare, the IPSI team, representatives from AIIMS New Delhi, and members from IIPHS.” Click Here

 

IIPHS organised a Workshop on “How to Critique scientific Literature?” for its students and Research Staff, on the 3rd of October 2023. We are proud to present two One Health Fellowships for the year 2022-23 under the Clinical Research and Training Programme of the Zoonotic Vector Borne Disease Research and Training Centre implemented by IIPH Shillong and supported by DBT Wellcome India Alliance. The Fellowship is for a period of 3 years and is aimed at capacity building in infectious diseases and in particular the zoonotic vector borne diseases. Fellows will have the opportunity to be trained in different institutes in the country and abroad.

My journey from dentistry to public health has been a profound personal experience, transitioning from the confines of a dental clinic to the expansive realm of public health. I am grateful and pleased to have been awarded the One Health fellowship by the DBT/ Welcome Trust India Alliance. And as I embark on this new phase as a Clinical Research and Training Programme fellow with support from DBT Wellcome India Alliance, I am excited about the prospects and challenges it holds. I believe that this fellowship will provide me with unique opportunities to deepen my expertise in the field of Zoonotic and Vector Borne Diseases and engage in transformative research that has the potential to shape the future of healthcare.

One Health CRTP Fellow

I am excited to announce that I have been selected for the CRTP One Health Fellowship and PhD program funded by DBT-Wellcome trust India Alliance at the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH)- Shillong!

After graduating with a Master of Public Health (MPH) from IIPH-Delhi, I worked as a District Epidemiologist at the National Health Mission. There, I gained experience in conducting surveillance and outbreak investigations, developing and implementing public health interventions, and working with communities to improve health outcomes. I have participated in various communicable disease prevention and control activities, including leading outbreak investigations for endemic diseases such as dengue, leptospirosis, hepatitis, West Nile virus etc. Additionally, I played a pivotal role in COVID-19 control activities, collaborating with various stakeholders from other departments. Later I joined the National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC) as a Consultant in the CP/CPHC division, I worked on conducting operational research and impact assessments to improve the design and rollout of CP-CPHC interventions and projects to strengthen the primary healthcare system in India.

The CRTP One Health Fellowship provides opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research on zoonotic vector-borne diseases. I look forward to make a positive impact in the field of public health and contribute to the fight against zoonotic and vector-borne diseases.

IIPHS organised a Writeshop for MPH 1st Semester students on 20.9.23 where they had an opportunity to have an interactive session with Kong Patricia Mukhim, Editor of The Shillong Times. Students got a chance to read their pieces and Kong Patricia gave individual feedback. An MPH student said, “the session was beneficial as we got to first hand insights and feedback from such a renown writer”.  Another MPH student expressed, “I learnt how to bring scientific public health knowledge relevant to the public”.  Click Here

Day 5 – 15th September 2023
The Capacity Building Training for Health Managers on Hospital Preparedness on Public Health Emergencies @Neigrihms Shillong concluded with the participants engaging in field visits to the hospital to observe disaster preparedness followed by a mock drill which provided a hands-on experience for the participants. Participants explored various hospital departments and areas critical during a disaster, such as the emergency department, triage area, intensive care unit, radiology dept, etc. This hands-on experience was instrumental in enhancing their readiness to respond effectively to public health emergencies and disasters in their respective roles as health managers.  Click Here

The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong, in collaboration with NEIGRIHMS, inaugurated a five-day capacity-building workshop on Hospital Preparedness for Public Health Emergencies and Disasters today, 11th Sep, 2023 at NEIGRIHMS. This crucial capacity-building workshop forms a part of the nationwide training initiative under the Central Sector Scheme, ‘Health Sector Disaster Preparedness and Response.’ This initiative receives support from the Disaster Management Cell of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and it has forged partnerships with distinguished institutions across India, including the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS). The inaugural program was graced by the presence of esteemed individuals, including Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS, who honoured the occasion as the Chief Guest. Prof. C. Daniala, Medical Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS, was the Guest of Honor. There were host of dignitaries representing the states of Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya as well. The workshop will take place from the 11th to the 15th of September 2023 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong where expert faculty members from IIPHS, NEIGRIHMS, the Fire & Emergency Services of the Government of Meghalaya, and MIMHANS (Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences) will deliver insightful presentations on various topics including hospital preparedness for disaster, fire and safety measures in hospitals, the management of CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) disaster situations etc. The comprehensive training program will conclude with a mock drill demonstration to be held at the NEIGRIHMS hospital.  Click Here

The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong along with AIIMS New Delhi and District Health Department, Govt of Meghalaya conducted a one-day training on 1st September 2023 about Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Initiative at Tura, West Garo Hills. All together there were 37 participants consisting of Medical Officers, CHOs, Health Educators, LHV, Block Program Managers etc. An inaugural program was held in the morning where the DM&HO addressed the gathering. Resource persons for the workshop were from AIIMS New Delhi led by Dr Sumit Malhotra, Professor, Department of Community Medicine.    Click Here
