“My journey at the Indian Institute of Public Health, Shillong, during my Masters in Public Health remains one of the most meaningful chapters of my life. The institute provided not just an excellent academic environment but also a nurturing space that helped me evolve as a person and as a professional.

The MPH program at IIPH Shillong laid a strong foundation in public health, equipping me with essential knowledge, practical skills, and a deeper understanding of the health needs of communities. The faculty members, with their expertise and constant encouragement, played a crucial role in shaping my confidence and guiding my learning.

One of the most valuable things I gained was the ability to think critically—something that continues to help me every single day in my role as a Medical Officer. Whether I am managing programs, analyzing situations, or contributing to policy discussions, the training and values I received at IIPH Shillong remain at the heart of my work.

Looking back, I feel grateful for the exposure, friendships, mentorship, and experiences that broadened my perspective and strengthened my commitment to public health. IIPH Shillong truly shaped me into a more capable, compassionate, and purpose-driven professional.”

“My passion for public health crystallized during my BDS years, ultimately leading me to pursue my MPH at IIPH Shillong in 2023. The institute’s substantial contributions to addressing public health challenges in Northeast India provided the ideal foundation for my exploration of regional health disparities. I worked on a project in the West Garo Hills district to assist five public health facilities in order to prepare them for their National Quality Assurance Standard certification. That experience built my confidence in providing healthcare to the rural communities, a type of work I was apprehensive about, and deepened my interest in community based public health work.

The Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health module by Dr. Sandra Albert ma’am, Director, IIPH, Shillong, and additional lectures by Dr. Saldanha, an eminent gynaecologist and Consultant, Meghalaya Health Systems Strengthening Programme sparked my interest and understanding of gender and sexuality. Particularly, I developed a nuanced understanding of the inequity in healthcare faced by the LGBTQI+ communities which shaped my research trajectory.

Now in 2025, as a CRTP Fellow, under the CARET project at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, my research involves the identification and implementation of programs and opportunities to address the inequities faced by the LGBTQI+ communities.

What truly distinguishes IIPH Shillong is its unique fusion of andragogy, hands-on practical experience, and cutting-edge technological integration that ignited my intellectual curiosity. Beyond the curriculum, the personalized mentorship I received from faculty throughout my MPH journey was unparalleled. Such exceptional individualized support is rare, and I remain profoundly grateful for it.”

Dr. Melari Shisha Nongrum,

Associate Professor & Dean of Academics,

Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong

Dr. Melari Shisha Nongrum, was awarded the Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Chair for the Spring 2024 semester. She was hosted by the Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI) and collaborated with colleagues at the Rollins School of Public Health. At Emory, she worked on a pedagogical research project entitled: Insights into Tribal Health: Development of a Training Module for Health Professionals. Dr. Nongrum’s work aims to develop a teaching module contextualizing tribal health in India and inculcating cultural sensitivities among students toward tribal communities.

Dr. Nongrum highlighted that “Public Health per se is quite interdisciplinary.” As she shares her work with diverse communities both on and off campus, she emphasizes that “Cultural aspects of health are often overlooked, with the emphasis typically placed on structural factors.” For her, engaging with a broad range of public health experts is crucial, as it provides valuable insights into how traditional knowledge systems can be harnessed to promote better health outcomes.  Read more

Dr. Shreyansh Raizada,

Research Analyst,

Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi

Having a great deal of interest in community work and helping those in need, combined with my love for nature and north-eastern India, I enrolled myself in the Master’s in Public Health program of IIPH Shillong. And it turned out to be the best decision I made for myself and my career. I came across several subjects that intrigued me throughout the curriculum. The faculty here was like no other I had ever experienced, so approachable, and always willing to listen and provide valuable feedback to our queries and concerns. The lectures here were more like open discussions which groomed and pushed me to expand my viewpoint as a public health specialist. The atypical teaching methodology enabled me to learn new subjects and skills like biostatistics and data analysis, program and project management, M&E, health financing, etc. with much ease. Additionally, from the guidance and support of my esteemed faculty of Biostatistics, Dr. Melissa G. Lewis ma’am, and my friends, I was able to secure the highest marks in Biostatistics across IIPHs for MPH 2021-23 and consequently, win the Professor Indrayan Award for Excellence in Biostatistics.

Currently, I am working as a Research Analyst with the Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi in their project “Health Coverage in Meghalaya: A Survey of Availability, Accessibility, Affordability and Quality of Health Care”, where I manage the conduction of survey in Meghalaya and monitor the daily activities and data quality among other things. In the past, I have worked as the State Technical Advisor, MP with International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) in their Axshya Plus Project, where I supervised, monitored and managed the implementation of the project in 27 districts across Madhya Pradesh and liaised with the State TB Cell, MP for smooth functioning of the project and streamline the challenges encountered.

The curriculum and environment of IIPH Shillong has encouraged me to perform well academically and professionally and explore, prepare, and push myself further to face the challenges in the field of public health and apply them to excel in the system.
