Background
Overview of the course
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is rapidly expanding its scope for evidence-based policy decision making. New interventions and technologies are constantly being developed and refined but their impacts on health, and implications for health systems, are not always clear. HTA is a systematic and multidisciplinary evaluation of the properties of health technologies and interventions covering both their direct and indirect consequences. It is a transparent and accountable process that can be used by decision makers and other stakeholders to support the decision-making process in health care at the policy level by providing evidence about given technologies It has been described as a bridge that connects the world of research to that of policy making.
While on one hand there is a growing need to conduct quality HTA studies to support healthcare policy decisions we realize on other hand the paucity of trained human resources to undertake such studies and limited HTA training facilities and courses being offered in the country. Hence a need to initiate a formal post graduate level specialized degree programme in HTA has been realized to bridge this gap.
The M.Sc programme in Health Economics and Technology Assessment (HETA) aims to provide training to nurture young minds with a critical understanding of the processes of HTA who can assess and evaluate economic, social and ethical aspects of different health interventions, health technologies and their impact on health policy. The programme objectives are to provide the students a broad understanding of the core areas of health economics and health technology assessment through experiential learning using real-world examples, emphasizing India specific case studies and its comparisons with other countries.
