- The lecture titled “Broken NHS: How Did It Happen and What Can Be Done?” facilitated by Dr. Rajan Madhok on 21st November 2024, at IIPH Shillong, MIIT Holy Cross, provided a thought-provoking analysis of the current challenges facing the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. The session delved into its historical evolution, foundational principles, current issues, and the critical reasons contributing to its decline. A significant focus was placed on the interplay between social care and healthcare services, as well as the detrimental role of income inequality in undermining the NHS framework.
The session explored the multifaceted reasons behind the perceived decline in the NHS’s healthcare performance and presented potential strategies for its revival. It was an eye-opener on how policy decisions, economic trends, and societal shifts can converge to challenge even the most robust healthcare systems. Click Here - The Zoonotic Vector Borne Research and Training Centre, Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Shillong along with the Centre for Gender in Global Context, Michigan State University had organized a two day workshop on Advanced Data Analysis of Qualitative Data on July 24 and 25, 2024 at IIPH Shillong. This workshop was facilitated by Dr Soma Chaudhuri who is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. She is also the Co-Director of Global Research for the Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) which is the university’s hub for gender-based research and curriculum. Young professionals from different institutes in the state and region benefitted from this workshop. We are also glad to inform that IIPH Shillong has signed an MoU with Michigan State University in March 2024. This is aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two institutes in terms of academics, research and building capacity in the state and region. Click Here
The workshop was followed by a Public Health Lecture On 25th July, 2024, Dr. Soma Chaudhuri delivered a public health lecture on Negotiating Livability for Precarious Lives: Childhood Education and Women’s Agency in India. Her talk focuses on how violence at the community and household level is used to legitimize structural and institutional level gender inequalities that specifically disadvantage grassroots women. A workshop on teaching and learning was conducted by Dr. Sandra Albert, Director of IIPHS, at Holycross Campus on 28th June 2024. The workshop was attended by faculty members and research scholars involved in mentoring students of Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BPH) and Master of Public Health (MPH) courses. The workshop aimed to familiarize participants with various teaching methodologies and principles of adult learning. It emphasized creating conducive environments for adult learners and enhancing their learning experiences. The workshop featured practical activities such as the Multiple Intelligence Inventory and Myers-Briggs Personality Test, which helped participants understand different learning styles and personalities. The workshop concluded on a positive note, with participants expressing high satisfaction and enthusiasm. This workshop not only enriched the participating teachers and scholars but also underscored IIPHS’s commitment to fostering continuous professional development among its faculty, ultimately benefiting the educational experience of its students. IIPHS organised a three-day training program on National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification for PHC and HWC from the 10th – 12th June 2024 at the Holycross campus, Shillong. The training focused on comprehensive understanding of the NQAS Standards, criteria and requirements, practical approaches to implementing and adhering to these standards at the facility level and understanding of the assessment and evaluation techniques. The participants benefited immensely from the training. - HTAIn-RRC research staff from IIPH Shillong participated in the Health Economic Evaluation workshop organised by the Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the 22 HTAIn Resource Centers on May 9 and 10, 2024 at Delhi.
The objective of the workshop were:

The course was led by diverse faculty from India and the US, India Sailesh Mohan, Shifalika Goenka, Dorairaj Prabhkaran, Leslie Johnson and Mohammed Ali. - Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) along with the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and Regional Medical Research Centre, Dibrugarh jointly organized the ‘Regional Consultative Workshop on Research Priority for Providing Accessible and Affordable Healthcare for North East States of India’ on the 21st and 22nd of February, 2024 at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. The Hon’ble Union Minister of Health, Government of India – Dr Mansukh Mandaviya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare- Dr Bharti Pravin Pawar and Health Minister of Meghalaya- Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh were the Guest of Honor for the Inaugural Session. - Members of the IIPH Shillong participated in the “Winter Symposium & South Zone MicroCon 2024 -“One Health One World: Connecting the Dots” , a three-day event organized by Christian Medical College Vellore from February 1st-3rd, 2024. The symposium featured distinguished scientists from both India and abroad, focusing latest advancements in AMR, VBDs, and zoonoses. It also highlighted the importance of a One Health approach in addressing these challenges. Workshop titled “Introduction to Statistical Data Analysis using R” hosted by the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS) on December 7th and 8th, 2023, at Conference Hall, Pasteur Institute, Lawmali, Shillong. The workshop was led by Ms. Sumali Bajaj, a PhD student specializing in infectious disease modeling at the University of Oxford, UK. Workshop titled “Reflective Writing and Public Health Practice: Drawing Insights from the UK” for the MPH students, research staff, and junior faculty, on November 27 and 28, 2023, the workshop was facilitated by Dr.Rajan Madhok, a distinguished public health doctor with extensive experience in senior medical management roles within the National Health Service (NHS) UK. The workshop offered valuable guidance on embracing reflective practices and its application in Public Health and navigating the complexities of implementing health policies.

- IIPHS organized a Workshop on First Aid Responder for the MPH 1st and BSc PH 5th semester students at IIPHS Lawmali on the 16th and 17th October 2023. The Workshop was facilitated by Dr. Tiameren Jamir, Registrar and Lecturer of Academics IIPHS. Through this session, the students have learned about the first aid care on emergency cases that they encounter in their day to day lives and also gained practical knowledge on CRP and AED. - “The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS), in collaboration with the India Primary Healthcare Support Initiative (IPSI), AIIMS-New Delhi, Johns Hopkins University, and the Government of Meghalaya, convened the District kickoff meeting for the Comprehensive Primary Health Care Support Initiative project in West Garo Hills. The meeting was presided over by Shri Jagdish Chelani, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills. As part of our capacity building and skill development in public health research, our research officers and fellows participated in a two days Workshop on Systematic Review and Meta-analysis on September 14 and 15, 2023. Organised by the Department of Community Medicine in collaboration with the Department of Medical Education, Northeastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Facilitators of the workshop were experts from ESI Medical College & PGMISR, Chennai. - The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong, in collaboration with NEIGRIHMS, inaugurated a six-day capacity-building workshop on Hospital Preparedness for Public Health Emergencies and Disasters today, 11th Sep, 2023 at NEIGRIHMS. This crucial capacity-building workshop forms a part of the nationwide training initiative under the Central Sector Scheme, ‘Health Sector Disaster Preparedness and Response.’ This initiative receives support from the Disaster Management Cell of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and it has forged partnerships with distinguished institutions across India, including the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS). The inaugural program was graced by the presence of esteemed individuals, including Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS, who honoured the occasion as the Chief Guest. Prof. C. Daniala, Medical Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS, was the Guest of Honor. There were host of dignitaries representing the states of Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya as well. The workshop will take place from the 11th to the 16th of September 2023 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong where expert faculty members from IIPHS, NEIGRIHMS, the Fire & Emergency Services of the Government of Meghalaya, and MIMHANS (Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences) will deliver insightful presentations on various topics including hospital preparedness for disaster, fire and safety measures in hospitals, the management of CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) disaster situations etc. The comprehensive training program will conclude with a mock drill demonstration to be held at the NEIGRIHMS hospital. The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong along with AIIMS New Delhi and District Health Department, Govt of Meghalaya conducted a one-day training on 1st September 2023 on Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Initiative at Tura, West Garo Hills. All together there were 37 participants consisting of Medical Officers, CHOs, Health Educators, LHV, Block Program Managers etc. An inaugural program was held in the morning where the DM&HO addressed the gathering. - A public health lecture series entitled “Is health equity attainable? Lessons from working with the poor” organized by IIPHS on 31st May 2023 at Seminar Hall, MIIT. Dr Varghese Philip, a distinguished surgeon and esteemed alumni of CMC Vellore, who also holds a Master’s degree from the prestigious London School of Economics, was the resource person. The event brought together policymakers, government officials, dedicated faculty members, and passionate public health students. - John Hopkins University, AIIMS New Delhi, IIPHS and the Health Department, Government of Meghalaya jointly participated in a workshop held at Conference Hall, Pasteur Institute, Lawmali Shillong on the 21st of April, 2023. This was a culmination of a three-day Joint Learning visit to West Garo Hills under the Indian Primary care Support Initiative (IPSI) project which has been rolled out in three states of Meghalaya, Gujarat and Odisha. - The Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong (IIPHS), represented by the Director and the Registrar had a fruitful interaction with Shri Y. A 4- days training program was conducted from 8th-11th March’23 by the IIPH, Shillong under the ZOONOTIC AND VECTOR BORNE DISEASES AND TRAINING CENTRE PROJECT with Mr. J Senthil Kumar, Data Manager, Christian Medical College, Vellore as the resource person.

Other Training
Training and mentorship through internship has been provided to over 15 interns from the region. In addition to this, continuous capacity building is encouraged in the institute. Till date 67 (current and new employees) of IIPHS have attended 22 different courses (overlapping) spanning topics like Decision analytic modelling for economic evaluations in HTA, Winter School in Statistical Genetics, and Integrated Bioethics Curriculum in Health Sciences Workshop by UNESCO India, Public health analytics and disease modelling, Responsible Conduct of Research for Research Administrators, Good Clinical practice etc.
